Editorial policy
These are the rules we hold ourselves to. They exist to protect people making real financial decisions at difficult times.
What we publish
- Plain-English explanations of UK benefits, redundancy rules and council support.
- Procedural guidance — what to do, in what order, and what catches people out.
- Interactive tools that estimate outcomes from the information you enter.
What we will not publish
- Definitive eligibility decisions — those are for the DWP and your local council.
- Personalised financial, legal or tax advice.
- Affiliate-driven recommendations of debt products, loans, credit or insurance.
- Scarcity language, urgency tactics, or anything designed to pressure a decision.
- Content reviewed only by software. Every guide is checked by a human against current GOV.UK guidance.
Sources and figures
Every figure on the site is read from one central rules file. When DWP updates a threshold or rate, we update it in one place and a public changelog records the change. Our primary sources are GOV.UK, Citizens Advice, Turn2us, and CPAG handbooks.
Use of AI
We use AI tools to help draft and review content. Every published guide is reviewed by a human editor against current official sources before publication. AI is not used to make eligibility decisions or to generate figures.
Corrections
If you spot a figure or rule that is out of date or wrong, email hello@benefitcheck.uk. We aim to fix material errors within two working days and log every change on the current rules page.
How we make money
The check, the results, the guides and the tools are free. We charge £9.99 for an optional personalised action plan PDF. We do not take affiliate commissions on benefit applications, debt products or insurance, and we do not run advertising.
