Benefits if you cannot work due to illness

6 min read · Updated 26 May 2026

If a long-term illness or disability means you can't work, several UK benefits may help. They serve different purposes — replacing income, recognising extra living costs, or both — and many people receive more than one.

Universal Credit with limited capability for work

If you claim UC and provide fit notes, you'll usually be referred for a Work Capability Assessment. Depending on the outcome you may be placed in LCW or LCWRA. LCWRA adds a significant extra monthly amount to UC and removes most work-search requirements.

New Style ESA

If you've paid enough NI in the last two to three tax years, you may qualify for New Style ESA. It's not means-tested. You can claim it alongside UC; the ESA amount is taken off UC, but it can still be worth claiming for NI credits and entitlement reasons.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

PIP is for people aged 16 to State Pension age with long-term physical or mental health conditions that affect daily living or mobility. It's not means-tested, not affected by work, and can be paid alongside other benefits.

If you're over State Pension age, the equivalent benefit is Attendance Allowance.

Council tax, prescriptions and other costs

  • Council Tax Reduction (varies by council)
  • Disability premium or discounts on council tax
  • NHS Low Income Scheme for help with prescriptions, dental and eye care
  • Blue Badge for parking, where eligible
  • Carer's Allowance for someone who cares for you 35+ hours a week
