Help with rent after losing your job
5 min read · Updated 26 May 2026
Rent is usually the largest bill, and falling behind quickly becomes serious. If you've lost your job or your income has dropped, there are several types of UK help that may cover some or all of your rent. Acting early gives you the most options.
Universal Credit housing element
If you're of working age and rent your home, the housing element of Universal Credit is the main way the system helps with rent. The amount depends on your rent, where you live, how many bedrooms you need, and whether you're a social or private tenant.
Private tenants are usually capped at the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rate for the area. Social tenants may be capped by the bedroom rules (sometimes called the bedroom tax).
Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP)
If your UC housing element doesn't cover your rent, you can apply to your local council for a Discretionary Housing Payment. DHPs are short-term top-ups and not guaranteed, but they're worth applying for if you're at risk of arrears.
Housing Benefit
Most working-age people now claim UC instead of Housing Benefit. Housing Benefit may still apply if you're of State Pension age, in supported, sheltered or temporary accommodation.
Talk to your landlord early
Landlords often prefer a payment plan to an eviction. Speak to them as soon as you know you'll struggle, and put any agreement in writing.
