Benefits for parents after redundancy
5 min read
If you have children, redundancy hits the household budget hard. Several benefits and discounts can help.
Universal Credit child element
UC includes a monthly child element for your first two children (with some exceptions for third and subsequent children). A higher rate applies for disabled children.
Child Benefit
Child Benefit is paid for each child under 16 (or under 20 in approved education). It's separate from UC and worth claiming even if you choose not to receive the payments — it protects your NI record.
Help with childcare
UC can refund up to 85% of childcare costs while you look for work or start a new job. Tax-Free Childcare is a separate scheme that can give 20% off costs.
Free school meals and uniform help
Free school meals are available to children whose families claim UC and have low earnings. Many councils also run school uniform grants — check your local council's website.
